Two features of this collection of sixteen essays are particularly noteworthy. The first is its breadth of coverage, in terms of language of contribution (seven in English, six in French, three in German), period covered (twelfth to fifteenth century, quite evenly), and language of study (predominantly French, but also German, English, and Latin). As such, the collection reflects the overall diversity of the contributions at the conference, of which a list is provided together with, most usefully, a URL (www.unituebingen.de/mediaevistik/icls) via which abstracts for all the papers can be consulted. The second feature concerns the attempts to make the volume as accessible as possible through the inclusion of 'tempter' abstracts in English at the head of all papers and the translation of all cited primary material (into the language of contribution and not, as the editors say (p. x), into English). Whether such attempts might have been enhanced by provision of an index including themes, and not just names and works, merits consideration. …
