In Memoriam: Lorraine A Gauthier, 1947-1999

The Toronto feminist and Franco-Ontarian communities, as well as members of the School for Women's Studies at York University, have lost one of their most remarkable colleagues. Lorraine Gauthier died on June 23, 1999 after a long struggle with cancer, a struggle she engaged in heroically over the past three years. An indefatigable worker and equipped with an astounding passion, Lorraine Gauthier was active in a number of causes, in particular the fight against violence. Readers of RFR/DRF will recall her involvement in the most recent theme issue on violence against women, for which Lorraine was guest editor of the French portion. For this work, Lorraine was able to draw on her years of experience, research and activism in the feminist Francophone community in Ontario.

Radical from the very beginning and intensely involved with Francophone women's groups, Lorraine Gauthier had a very clear idea how to initiate and develop many different projects. But it was in another capacity that Lorraine will be unforgettable and irreplaceable: that of educator. …
