In this timely revision, the Chernicks (both MDs) use a narrative account of therapy with a fictional maritally discordant, sexually dysfunctional couple (the Gordon's) to present their current approach to integrating sex and marital therapy (10 sessions over a 6-month period). The authors view most sexual dysfunctions as being intertwined with communication/ intimacy dysfunctions. So, after forging an initial contract, the first half of therapy is devoted to helping the couple turn their interaction around using behaviorally oriented methods such as the "I Feel," "Ten-Minute Talk," and "Negotiating A Contract" exercises. After the couple establishes a new level of mutual respect and appreciation, the next rungs on the "ladder to sexual satisfaction" involve the gradual introduction of some standard sex therapy techniques.

In Touch has a great deal to recommend it, not just for clients but also for therapists wishing to learn more about sex therapy. The narrative form is believable and engaging, revealing the genuineness and skill of the therapists as well as the anguish and dilemmas of the clients. …
