Dana Vannoy and Paula Dubeck have compiled a volume which concerns itself with the institutions of work and family at the close of the 20th century and lays out an agenda for the coming century. With few exceptions, the chapters in this volume are derived from presentations at a 1996 conference entitled Agenda for the 21st Century Labor Force: Implications of Changing Family Structure, Diversitv and Jobs. which was organized around five issues involving social and corporate policy issues: (a) the need for families to function well (in response to family instability and its effects for children); (b) the need for new structures of work allowing parents to be employed and raise children (in response to the prevalence of and trend toward dual-eamer families); (c) the need for healthy work environments for all (in response to the inevitable, increasing diversity and diminishing civility in some arenas of work); (d) the need for reasonable security or adequate pay for citizens (in response to the developing dual economy and growing poverty); and (e) the need for work for more persons to do in postindustrial society (in response to technological change).

As Vannoy points out in the concluding chapter, however, this depiction of the interrelationship between work and family is reducible to two general themes: (a) the inclusion of women in the work force and the predominance of dual-earner families; and (b) the shift from the predominance of the industrial sector to the predominance of the information sector in the economy. …
