So much attention has recently been paid to Christine the (putative) feminist, that we have risked losing sight of what is arguably a much more important Christine: the political thinker. This pleasantly produced edition is a new and welcome contribution to Christine studies, and an excellent augury for the new tudes christiniennes' directed by Bernard Ribemont. It replaces the earlier, pioneering edition by R. H. Lucas (Geneva, 1967), which was marred by a dubious choice of base manuscript and by the doubtful accuracy of the transcription, and which, notably, had no glossary or list of proper names (in a text which buzzes with them). That Angus Kennedy's edition is based on a manuscript, Chantilly 294, which is now known to be autograph inspires confidence; I have not been able to check his transcription, but I am more than reassured by the fact that I have been unable to detect a single coqaille either in the text, or in the variants (which are taken from all three of the remaining MSS which can be considered autographes ou originaux, p. xli). Kennedy's introduction contains all the usual elements, and is a model of caution and scholarliness: he addresses idies refaes and weighs the evidence, refusing, for instance, to date the text with precision (he will say only 'towards the end of the period 1404-7'). …
