This volume is an unusual and extremely useful collection of primary documents, translated from original sources by Goodich, concerning marginal groups in medieval society. After a general introduction, the sources in this collection are divided into six sections as follows: Jews, apostates and converts, sexual nonconformists, victims of the devil, Christian heretics, and the liminal and temporarily marginalized. Each section of texts includes a short introduction on the persons or groups concerned, and each text is preceded by a background sketch setting up the context of the material. Goodich has given both lay readers and specialized scholars a fascinating, essential, and valuable source book for the study of medieval history with this collection. …
