IAM-Encouraging Professional Development

Article excerpt

Professional Development has been a keystone of the IAM since its creation in 1915. In 1994 the Institute formalised its commitment to professional development by creating and launching its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme.

The scheme provides a framework to help plan, manage, monitor and record professional development activities. This scheme is believed to be unique amongst those provided by UK professional bodies because it provides a means for participants to have achievements recorded on a central database. Participants are able to arrange for transcripts of their CPD record to be transmitted to employers and prospective employers.

The IAM CPD Scheme is voluntary and open to all members, irrespective of grade. Registration is free but members should note that, ifthey wish to apply for the award ofthe Institute's Certificate and Diploma in Professional Development (see below) there is an assessment fee of L35.

On registering you will receive your personal CPD Portfolio - the guiding document that contains useful background information, details and instructions about how to use the scheme and copies of the documentation required. Participants are able to plan and produce their CPD records using either a paper-based system or an 'electronic' version.

IAM 'Registered Managers/ Administrators'

By joining the scheme and submitting a SWOT analysis and Personal Development Plan, participants are recognised as 'Registered Managers / Administrators'. Note that this title is NOT a grade of membership. …
