New CEO for CPHA

What a privilege to serve as the new Chief Executive Officer for the Canadian Public Health Association, and Managing Editor of the CJPH. I look forward to working with the committed volunteers and dedicated staff at CPHA.

Last May in Calgary, the Institute of Population and Public Health convened a Think Tank to respond to a paper, "The Future of Public Health in Canada" (see pages 6-11 of this issue), prepared by an advisory group which included CPHA staff. This exciting event called for a major campaign to build on the momentum of various federal and provincial government reports, and led to the formation of the Coalition for Public Health in the 21st Century (see page 11 for list of members). The Coalition's mission is the development of an adequately resourced system for public health that protects and promotes the health of Canadians for today, for emerging issues, and for tomorrow's emergencies.

The Coalition's messages are:

1) Immediate and continued financial investment in public health - $1 billion to the front line now and a doubling of current spending over the next five years.

2) National leadership in Public Health to provide a focal point and a pan-Canadian approach - a national institution for Public Health, and a National Public Health Officer.

3) A national information and communications system allowing timely adequate surveillance, information sharing, analysis and decision-making across jurisdictions. …
