Behold the Man! An Anthropological Comparison of the Christologies of John Macquarrie and of Wolf hart Pannenberg. By Marion Lars Hendrickson. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 1998. ix + 104 pp. $32.50 (cloth).

This published version of Hendrickson's S.T.M. thesis from Nashotah House is a valiant attempt at examining the apparently disparate views of John Macquarrie and Wolfhart Pannenberg. But Hendrickson is not interested in synthesizing Macquarrie and Pannenberg. Rather, he wishes to place "each theologian side by side to gain a fuller understanding of Christology and anthropology" (p.2). This is possible, according to Hendrickson, due to the mutual starting point of anthropology in the thought of both theologians, even though they diverge in their methods-"existentialism in Macquarrie, methaphysics in Pannenberg" (p.2).

Hendrickson's work is divided into four parts: an introductory chapter with brief biographical sketches of Macquarrie and Pannenberg; a second chapter (the longest of the four) in which Macquarrie's anthropological Christology is rehearsed and critics of Macquarrie's view are rebuffed; a third chapter on Pannenberg's Christological anthropology with a brief survey of criticism; and a fourth chapter containing a summary overview of both theologians, key shared issues, and concluding remarks.

Although perhaps necessary for a thesis, it was frustrating that most of this short essay was spent explicating Macquarrie and Pannenberg on anthropology and Christology rather than engaging their differences. …
