The annual colloquia organized at King's College London by Professor David Hook from 1992 until his move to Bristol became a key event in British medieval Hispanism. They were marked by inclusivity and by the highest degree of scholarship, and it is no surprise that many of the papers given there have subsequently been published and become standard points of reference: one thinks, for example, of Jeremy Lawrance's paper on the rubrics in the Libra de buen amor, and Jane WhetnalPs work on cancionero poetry. It may be a good thing that there seems to have been no expectation of the automatic appearance of series of Acta, many of which, with the best will in the world, can turn out to be of uneven quality. However, Professor Hook has now collected together seven outstanding essays - this is in no sense some kind of dustbin for papers which have not found publication elsewhere - which could be said to represent the best of the papers given between 1992 and 2000. They arc, it is stated, 'revised versions', but it would have been interesting to have been given the information about when the original papers were presented.
