Stop Press: IAM Accredits School Business Managers

THOSE of us who remember the traditional 'school secretary' as the guardian of the registers and the headteacher's gatekeeper, would have been surprised if they had spoken to any of the recipients of the Certificate in School Business Management (CSBM) in Nottingham in November.

The role is now much more akin to that of the 'Bursar' as Charles Clarke, the secretary of State for Education, pointed out In his address by video link to the 70 graduates of the pilot programmes at the National College for School Leadership (NCSL).

His views were echoed by Tony Richardson, Director for Online Learning, who also praised the participants for their commitment and perseverance in completing the course. Tony then sprang a pleasant surprise on those about to receive their awards as he announced that the Award would be accredited by the Institute of Administrative Management (IAM).

The Institute's Chief Executive, David Woodgate, was in the audience and later commented: 'We have spent some considerable time working with the National College's School Business Management development team checking content and, perhaps more importantly, the assessment process against our established protocols. Our Examinations Officer was impressed by the rigour of the Programme, and we are pleased to recognise this developing role in the UK education system, especially bearing in mind that many of our members already hold such positions in schools. …
