My brother said Dad hacked

their heads off with an axe

because he didn't want

to waste more bullets

on the half-dead goats

The child was shocked

by all that slow chop

bone-crunch and bleating meat

but country boys must be real men

and real men are

definitely not squeamish

so later my four brothers learned

to slaughter sheep

but I never watched

never wanted to see

red spray from the throat gash

And I remember my young-girl shock

discovering Dad drowned the pups

those bleary-eyed innocents which

always vanished so mysteriously

For consolation they gave me a cat

her first soft kittens were all mine

till one day found

small heads and paws

smeared on the concrete floor

by their father, a wild tom cat

they said it was natural -

male cats just do that

Spotlighting was

our night-time thrill

peering through darkness

for the bright eye-gleam

hushed whispers

as sights were levelled

I watched enthralled

but could not kill

My brothers took to it

quite easily

I knew I must exterminate

my female weakness

and with time I did -

the rabbits keeled over readily

when my finger squeezed metal
