The Poynter Institute has produced two videotapes that are excellent teaching tools for use in advanced and graduate-level television reporting classes. Each videotape runs about one-and-a-half hours and results from satellite teleconferences broadcast live from the institute to newsrooms throughout the country.

The tapes were produced in cooperation with RTNDA, CNN Newsource, WFLATV in Tampa, and CONUS. Both are roundtable discussions with working journalists. The moderator is Valerie Hyman, broadcast program director at The Poynter Institute. The discussions center on how work gets done in broadcast newsrooms today and on ways to improve both the process and the product.

Powerful Wrifing is particularly helpful because two award-winning television news packages are shown within it; one is a lengthy feature story and the second is spot, hard news. The panelists deconstruct each, so that students can see the individual video and audio elements which combine with reporter narration to make the pieces so powerful. …
