L40.00. These two volumes are the first in a new series, Arthurian Archives, the aim of which is to provide authoritative critical editions with parallel English translations of the Arthurian texts. They contain a revised edition by Norris Lacy of his ig8g edition of Beroul and a republication of Stewart Gregory's iggi edition of Thomas's poem, both appearing originally in the Garland Library of Medieval Literature series. Lacy has reconsidered parts of the text and has introduced a few emendations, notably in the light of Gregory's own edition of Beroul. He has also added a few items to the select bibliography, but this continues many of the errors of the earlier edition whilst introducing one or two more. Gregory's edition of Thomas seems essentially unchanged from 1991, with nothing later than 1989 listed in the bibliography. Some books appear in more than one guise in the various bibliographies, and this could confuse the unwary. But the volumes do offer a number of gains. Ian Short presents once more the important Carlisle fragment of Thomas's romance, and, although the existence of the fragment is now well known, this edition with a helpful English translation is welcome. …
