The Plain Texts Series from the Anglo-Norman Text Society gives a home to short, specialized, or self-explanatory texts, which are presented with a bare minimum of apparatus. The series already includes many small treasures, and these two volumes offer another interesting contribution, which throws light on sermon writing, the clerical cast of mind, and the role of French in England in the early thirteenth century. The five sermons are based ultimately on the first eight of Origen's Homilies on Joshua, adopting his illustrative materials and general approach, but replacing almost all of his commentary, so that they must be considered an original work, rather than a translation. The sermons consist largely of a detailed allegorical and, to a lesser extent, moral exegesis of the biblical text, drawing on etymology, typology, and long extended metaphors to reveal 'le duz nuel ki atapist suz la dure escorce de la lettre'. …
