This is an important book for a number of reasons. The manuscript is in many ways typical of the type of volume which most editors would describe, or perhaps dismiss, as a `compendium'. It contains a range of texts entirely typical of broadly literary collections from the later thirteenth century; like so many such manuscripts, there is a Picard dialectal colouring; at first sight, there is no obvious rationale underlying the assemblage of a disparate range of texts within one volume. Arsenal 35 t 6 contains a Bible; a number of works by Robert de Blois; a series of saints' lives; a range of quasi-scientific material, including lapidaries, part of the Lettre d'Hippocrate, and a computus and calendar (edited in this volume, pp. iot-t8); and sundry historical, literary, and didactic works. Guggenbuhl points out very reasonably that in each case, the editors of these individual texts have focused on that text alone, without attempting to place it within the broader context of the manuscript volume in which it is preserved. …
