Galien le restore en prose, ed. Hans-Erich Keller and Nikki L. Kaltenbach, Nouvelle Bibliotheque du moyen age 43 (Paris: Editions Honore Champion, 1998). 388 pp. ISBN 2-85203-767-X. F. Fr. 385.00. This edition of the fifteenth-century prose Galien replaces the unsatisfactory nineteenth-century German editions. It is in fact the edition of two texts, the manuscript version and the incunabula, which are sufficiently different to warrant this unusual, and helpful, presentation. The edition of the manuscript version comes first, followed by the early printed text, Galien Rethore. The selective glossary at the end covers both texts, with references to the printed version distinguished by a letter V (for Verard, the publisher). The brief introduction places Galien in the literary tradition, analyses the differences between the two versions, and compares them to the verse text (ed. D. M. Dougherty and E. B. Barnes, Amsterdam, 1981). A list of proverbs found in the two texts and a bibliography are appended to the introduction. Unfortunately the editorial principles are not explained. Few corrections are made to the text, indeed few are needed as the manuscript and printed text are both quite reliable; critical apparatus is kept to a minimum. …
