Letter from the Chairman: Hugh V. White Jr

Last November my colleagues on the board of trustees honored me with election as chairman. I'm grateful and in awe. Grateful because it is a great honor, and in awe because of the challenges that face this grand institution.

First, I want to salute my predecessor as chairman, Hugh R. Stallard. When he began his term, the country faced difficult financial prospects. Yet he guided the VHS successfully through those times with a steady hand on the wheel. With determination and devotion, he led our board in deciding that the VHS should maintain its ambitious level of services. That meant not retrenching at a time when other museums were cutting staff and programs. We are grateful for his leadership.

Second, I look forward to working with Charlie Bryan and his superb staff. We are fortunate to have such a fine group of hard-working professionals who have made the VHS one of the leading institutions of its kind in the country. I also look forward to working with Vice Chairman Claiborne Robins, Jr., who has already done so much for the VHS during the past several years.

So strong has been the commitment of the board and staff to continued excellence that even as we persevered through lean financial times, we planned for the future. …
