Building Blocks-The Easy Route to Qualifications

It's the old, old story. You work hard for two years. You pass your exams-perhaps with flying colours. You're presented with your certificate- show your boss - and maybe, if you re very lucky get a salary increase.

But what then?

Having gained my Advanced Diploma some three years ago at the ripe oldage of 50, I was, like everyone else, faced with just that dilemma.

Where do I go from here?

I reckoned I had three options:

To say enough was enough and sit back with the bonus of MInstAM behind my name -and pay around L65 each year ad infinitum for the privilege

To sign up for yet more evenings of study to achieve a degree in Business Administrationand having struggled (very hard) just to obtain the Finance module of the Advanced Diploma, all the effort could indeed prove fruitless. Or

To become a builder!

And the solution was presented to me on a plate (or should I say a hod!)

As Area Manager for the Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board and having previously been Marketing Manager for a Medical Indemnity organisation for several years, I was approached by a training provider at the local Enterprise Company to deliver a day's business training course on Marketing at Lochaber College. This was part of the foundation course for the MCI initiative - and, hey presto, suddenly my first building block appeared _

SVQ5 in Strategic Management.

My role as Area Manager involved everything from making sure the seasonal tourist information centres were well stocked with loo rolls to Chairing the Steering Group for Tourism Planning for a 2000 square mile area of the Highlands of Scotland. …
