This videotape is vintage Harry Goolishian. It not only presents Harry at his best, but it is also an excellent illustration of collaborative language systems.

The tape begins with an introduction by Harlene Anderson followed by a 50-minute interview with a family. Mom and Dad present their concerns regarding their son, who they suspect set the garage on fire, thus the name of the tape. Harry is indeed a "master conversationalist," respectfully visiting with the entire family about the incident then spending time alone with the children.

Headings within the tape describe Harry as an Armenian story teller. I would add, Armenian grandfather. Harry's interaction with the children is touching, warm, and patient. Their conversation is reminiscent of Harry's general interpersonal style.

Several of my students and I viewed this tape and then discussed its content. My students were impressed by Harry's ability to track with the family, letting them lead him through the family's telling of their story. The students were also impressed by how easily Harry could share his own point of view, interweaving his story with the family's without changing the general direction in which the family was headed. …
