SELF-help books can be daunting or appear disconnected from work situations, as paragons of virtue or efficiency tell you what to do to change yourself.

Nicholas Bate tackles one of these issues 'up front' as he notes: "The ways of working that I had utilised in more junior roles were not working in my new more senior roles." You get the message straight away that here is someone who has devised something different to help himself at work.

He does, however, miss a trick in tackling the issue of 'too much to do' because the book is easy to read and the strategies are not daunting. Indeed, Being the Best is a slightly misleading title, because it implies comparison with those paragons who you know you can never match. In fact, if we add 'you can be' it is a much more accurate picture of the book and makes it less daunting to adopt principles within it.

Bate actually says it very well: the book helps you "take your natural genetic advantages, and realise and release your full potential". …
