An Introduction to the Oxford Movement. By Michael Chandler. New York: Church Publishing, 2003. xi + 137 pp. $19.00 (paper).

As a student of the Oxford Movement, it is hard for me to look at yet another book that claims to be an "introduction" to that movement. However, Michael Chandler has produced a highly readable and concise little book on those heady years in the nineteenth century.

Chandler outlines the origins of the movement in the lethargy of the eighteenth-century Church of England. However, he does not spend enough time looking at the call to holiness that came from the Methodist movement and, in particular, the preaching of Charles Wesley. No movement begins in a vacuum or without a catalyst. I think that he relies too heavily on Newman's recollections in the Apologia pro vita sua and on Dean Church. Nonetheless, Chandler offers some insights into the so-called Hadleigh Conference. This meeting in the rectory of Hugh James Rose at Hadleigh, Suffolk gained notoriety only after the fact. However, there was a spirit in the air that lit a fire under Newman and from that point forward there was no looking back.

I found the treatment of the controversies during 1833-1845 very interesting. At some point these incidents will receive the analysis they deserve for their effect on the movement. For instance, we need to look at the conservative objection to Hampden s election as well as those of Newman, Pusey, and Keble. Also, the publication of The Remains ofHurrell Froude signaled the end of the toleration some churchmen felt for this group of men who sought to reestablish the theological tradition of the Caroline divines. …
