A Rock in a Weary Land: An Autobiography by Charles H. Mitchner with Doris N. Starks, PhD, FAAN and Alice H. Cornelius, PhD Published in 1999, this 112 page book is packed with the oft times painful memories of an African American who was born in 1911 near the beginning of the past century. His life and experiences as reflected in these pages tell a story of a brutal America which focuses heavily on those living in the state of Texas. One incident which I cannot get out of my mind is that of a Black soldier from New York who got on a bus and unknowingly sat in the front. When told to move to the back by the bus driver, the soldier made an off-the-cuff remark and was promptly shot in the back and killed by the bus driver who waited patiently for the military police to arrive. After the soldier's body was removed, the bus driver continued his route. This just seems so incredible, surely it must be the truth.

Other stories abound - some reminiscing of good times spent with family, others painfully telling stories about a grandmother whom the author disliked intensely. From all these stories, one can see where Mr. Mitchner garnered his strength and wisdom. He was a leader among men because he learned early that in order to survive he had to out-think almost everyone with whom he came in contact. …
