In Faithful and Fearless: Moving Feminist Protest inside the Church and Military, Cornell University professor Mary Fainsod Katzenstein suggests that despite dramatic advances made during recent decades feminist agendas still face major hurdles.

Katzenstein explores feminist protest in the US military establishment and the Roman Catholic Church. Katzenstein's discussion of the differences between the feminist impulses within the two settings is among the most intriguing dimensions of the book. She persuasively argues that while religious feminists within Roman Catholicism lean toward a radical discursive method, their counterparts in the military opt for a more moderate, influence-seeking, interest-group approach.

Katzenstein's historical analysis is solid. The interviews she conducted between 1988 and 1997 personalize abstract laws and statistics-the book's greatest strength. Attributing quotations to specific individuals strengthens the messages' impact. …
