In Memoriam: Martin Kirwan King (1932-2004)

HIS COLLEAGUES, THE STAFF, AND THE MEMBERS OF THE VHS WILL LONG REMEMBER THE DEVOTION OF MARTIN KIRWAN KING.

The VHS was deeply saddened by the death on February 27, 2004, of one of its most loyal trustees and longtime friends, Martin Kirwan King. Raised in Norfolk, Mr. King earned undergraduate history and graduate business degrees from Harvard University. He spent three decades as an executive with the Exxon Corporation and was managing director or affiliate president of Exxon operations throughout Latin America. Though he made his mark in the world abroad, Virginia always was home to him, especially his beloved Grove Mount on the Northern Neck, where, he liked to tell people, his family had lived for more than three centuries.

Martin and his wife, Tish, shared their expertise gleaned from volunteer work elsewhere to help the VHS create its volunteer program in the early 1990s. This flourishing support group, which gives thousands of hours of service every year, stands as a monument to their devotion to the Society. …
