The publication of a new edition of this interesting text is most welcome. The earlier edition by O. Schultz in 1890 lacked many of the features we now expect in modem editions. In spite of the lack of new editorial work on the text, its language and scripta have over the last hundred years attracted much attention with opinions on its linguistic location, most recently suggesting that there is the language of the text and the language of the scribe, which accommodates some of the conclusions. The well-known chronicle is represented in Occitan only in the version of the present edition, and harks back to the Latin C tradition. It contains thirty-four chapters and three appendices A, B, and D, with a few individual characteristics which separate it from other translations.

This edition has a long introduction detailing the structure of the whole Pseudo-Tutpin tradition, including examples of the various changes which occur in the Occitan version as compared with the French and Anglo-Norman versions. The analysis reveals a particular link with Gascony and the Saint Jacques pilgrims' way, and the richness of the supporting material is impressive. …
