This, the first volume in a new series, may present itself at first-sight as simply a reissue of editions by Felix Lecoy in the Classiques francais du Moyen Age collection, Le Roman de Tristan par Thomas and Les Deux poemes de la Folie Tristan, which appeared in 1992 and 1994 respectively. However, the book offers much more than this. As far as the texts themselves are concerned, minor errors in the Lecoy editions have been corrected and a number of emendations have been introduced. The Carlisle Thomas fragment, only made available to us ten or so years ago and which contains the important scene in which Tristan and Iseut drink the love potion, is now included and the material re-examined. The glossaries provided by Lecoy have also been revised and much expanded. Clearly, the texts provided here have emerged after a mature consideration not solely of Lecoy's work but also of other Tristan editions, Stewart Gregory's work on Thomas, for example (the text of the Oxford Folie naturally reflects the text Ian Short published in 1993). …
