Chevalerie et grivoiserie: fabliaux de chevalerie, ed. and trans. Jean-Luc Leclanche, Champion classiques 'Moyen Age' 3 (Paris: Champion, 2003). xxii + 281 pp. ISBN 2-7453-0735-5. euro9.00 (p/b). This volume, the first of an unspecified number, presents five well-known fabliaux (Le Prestre et le chevalier, Berengier ait lone cul, La Dame escoillee, Guillaume au faucon, Le Foteor, an appendix includes Les Putains et les lecheors and Le Lai du lechcor) deemed similar by virtue of the chivalric identity of both the main protagonist and the texts' alleged audience. User-friendliness is the overriding concern. Although derived from the diplomatic transcriptions printed in the Nouveau Recueil complet des fabliaux, the critical editions differ from NRCF, first by the sometimes puzzling use of different base manuscripts and second by a far less conservative editorial policy, which sees Jean-Luc Leclanche using other copies, or conjecture of varying degrees of audacity, to correct for case, hiatus, allegedly inferior readings, identical rhymes, and orphan lines. The translation likewise favours fluency over fidelity and, disturbingly, seems to be accorded greater importance than the edited text, since it is in the translation that footnote markers are positioned. …
