Message from the President

Article excerpt

Dear Colleagues,

The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) recently released a report entitled The Complete Curriculum: Ensuring a Place for the Arts and Foreign Language in America's Schools (See Foreign Language Annals, Winter 2003). The report concludes that there is a substantial body of research addressing the benefits of language study and the arts and that these disciplines "have often been marginalized and are increasingly at risk of being lost as a part of the core curriculum." The report has given yet greater credence to what we, as language educators have long known: Language learning must be an integral part of everyone's educational experience. It is now up to us to ensure that the recommendations outlined in the report land in the hands of the policy makers who make the decisions that affect our classrooms. I hope that the report will assist you as you advocate for language learning for all students.

As you read this, many of you may be en route to the SCOLT, SWCOLT, CSC, or NEC Spring conferences. One of the most talked about topics is sure to be the upcoming Year of Languages. ACTFL is busy preparing materials and events for this great occasion and as you gather with your colleagues, I hope you are inspired to organize a celebration of language learning at your own school or institution, in your home state or local community. A concerted effort to get things underway is spearheaded by past-presidents Marty Abbott and Christy Brown. You'll soon be hearing much more about this exciting initiative and how you can Celebrate, Educate, and Communicate the Power of Language Learning! …
