Meet the Staff: At the New ACTFL Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia

As of December 1, 2003, the official headquarters of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) moved to a charming brick building at 700 South Washington Street in Alexandria, Virginia-just across the Potomac river from the U.S. Capitol. This new location not only helps position our organization in close proximity to the U.S. Congress and the Administration, but it also allows ACTFL to better collaborate with the hundreds of other organizations that influence national policy. All membership, convention, communications, publications, and administrative functions are now housed in our Alexandria office.

Bref Lovejoy was named Executive Director of ACTFL in May 2003 and spent his early weeks establishing the new offices in Alexandria and coordinating the relocation from Yonkers. His background includes management and government relations responsibilities with other education associations, as well as directing education-related legislative activities on behalf of a member of Congress. Bret received his undergraduate degree in English from Washington and Lee University and his law degree from the College of William and Mary.

Steve Ackley joined ACTFL in june as Director of Communications, coming from a similar position with another association. Prior to that, he spent nearly 25 years in corporate communications and marketing with a newspaper publishing firm. he is responsible for ACTFLs publications and is heavily involved in planning the 2005 Year of Languages observance as well as ACTFLs longer-term image campaign to broaden awareness of and appreciation for language education. …
