By the time you read this, Canada will have a new government - a return of the Liberal majority? A minority government? What does this mean for public health?

For those of you who are working with the Canadian Coalition for Public Health in the 21st Century, you will have met with candidates, attended or organized town hall meetings, sent letters, all encouraging candidates to state their position on sustainable funding for public health. Did we succeed? Have we elected a government that will follow up on the "downpayment" in the most recent federal budget by increasing investments in public health? The sustainability of our cherished publicly funded health care system is only guaranteed by more investments in prevention, protection and promotion.

While elections come and go, the Canadian Public Health Association continues its work, not only through the Coalition, but through its own core activities. We are working with Health Canada, the Ontario Public Health Association, and other associations to explore the development of a national public health human resource strategy. First steps include a national environmental scan on 'who's doing what' in core competencies and functions in public health. …
