This book is the published version of Dr Jonsson's thesis and will form a very useful addition to the collections of hagiographic literature. The poems themselves have been edited with meticulous accuracy and reveal that the editor's interests are primarily linguistic. Both the introduction and the notes concentrate almost exclusively on the linguistic features of the two poems and show a mastery of detail. The conclusions drawn from this study are that the language is the current literary language of the period with marked traces of the Picard dialect at the south-western edge of its range in the Beauvoisis. The author, Pierre de Beauvais, was writing at the beginning of the thirteenth century, and his scribe, who was probably learned himself, was working before the end of the century. The editor gives some attention to the links of the two poems with the older Latin poems on the two saints and shows the extent to which Pierre de Beauvais used the work of his predecessors. …
