`La Lumere as lais' by Pierre d'Abernon of Fetcham, Vol. II, ed. Glynn Hesketh, AngloNorman Text Society LVI-LVII (London: Anglo-Norman Text Society, 1998). ISBN 090547435X. The publication of this second volume of the Lumere as lais now makes it possible to read the text in its entirety and also provides the reader with almost thirty pages of variants taken from the four most important surviving manuscripts, but any adequate assessment of the edition as a whole will have to await the appearance of the third volume. As was the case a decade ago with the Proverbes de Salemon it is only when the final part makes available the all-important introduction, notes, and glossary that the reader will be in a position to see how the editor has handled a large-scale text of considerable importance to the linguistic and social history of medieval England. Only then, for example, will he be able to take up the invitation made on p. 201: `For further information about these variants see Introduction.' It is to be hoped that the reader may find there observations as to the possible reason and, perhaps, the impact of some of the changes in vocabulary from one manuscript to another, because the author is breaking new ground in presenting to a lay audience in the vernacular a detailed exposition of the tenets and working of the Christian faith of his time. …
