The articles in this collection were originally published in periodicals or melanges between 1965 and 1996. These particular pieces deal with individual Arthurian romances; articles treating more general themes will be presented in a second volume entitled Problemes et mysteres des romans de chevalerie. The first volume begins with a short chapter on the date of the Chevalier de la Charrette, which argues that both that romance and the Chevalier au Lion were probably written in 1177 when Ascension Day came early in June. There are a number of chapters on the comic element in Chretien, as was to be expected from the author of Le Rire et le sourire dans le roman courtois en France au moyen Age (1150-1230). The first of these is on the Chevalier au Lion, where the characters are seldom described as laughing and the term sosrire is never applied to them. Philippe Menard concludes that the laughter evoked by Chretien is in the main of a subtle and often sympathetic kind. There are two chapters analysing comic elements in the Conte du Graal. The first of these compares the treatment of the naive young hero, le nice, in the chanson de geste with that in Chretien and in the Chevalier au Cygne. The naivete of Perceval and other comic themes in Chretien's romance are also explored in chapter 5. In chapter 6, the episode in which Perceval 'guesses' his name is examined in some detail. In chapter 7, the enigmas and mysteries of the unfinished romance are discussed. …
