Jehan Marot; Les Deux Recueils, ed. Gerard Defaux and Thierry Mantovani, Textes litteraires francais 512 (Geneva: Droz, 1999). ccxxvi + 605 pp.; 1 plate. ISBN 2-- 600-00352-5. Sw. Fr. 92.00. This massive volume comprises the complete works of Jean Marot with the exception of the two major poems on the Italian wars, Le Voyage de Genes and Le Voyage de Venise (edited by G. Trisolini in 1974 and 1977 respectively). The texts themselves occupy pp. 1-231, the notion of the two Recueils being the editors' solution to the difficulties inherent in establishing and classifying their poet's auvre. The first is the collection of his father's works as arranged by Clement Marot for Roffet's edition of 1533. The text used here is that of Bibliotheque Nationale, MS Res. p. Ye. 432, a state of that edition ascribed to the veuve Roffet and differing slightly from the Arsenal copy previously reproduced in the Scolar Press facsimile (introd. A. Saunders, 1971). The second Recueil is simply a grouping of J. Marot's remaining pieces, some never printed in the sixteenth century; notable here is a previously unknown version of the Epistre d'un complaignant l'abusif gouvernement du pape discovered by the editors. Selected variants for each item are given from various manuscripts or printed editions as appropriate.
