Die deutsche Literatur des Mittelalters. Veifasserlexikon, established by Wolfgang Stammler, continued by Karl Langosch, 2nd, fully revised edition with the collaboration of numerous specialists, ed. Burghart Wachinger in association with Gundolf Keil, Kurt Ruh, Werner Schroder, and Franz Josef Worstbrock, redaction Christine Stolinger-Loser. Vol. X, part 5 (Berlin: De Gruyter, 1999). ix + 186 pp. ISBN 311-006466-3. DM 104.00. The last fascicule of vol. X of the Verasserlexikon brings the alphabet to a close, and covers 'Wittenwiler, Heinrich' to `Das zwolfjahrige Mdnchlein'. A volume of addenda and corrections is in progress, and if funding can be found, there will be an index volume. The team of five editors, who published their first fascicule in 1977, has remained the same, with Kurt Ruh as general editor for vols. I-VIII, and Burghart Wachinger for vols. IX-X. The conception of this fundamental handbook of medieval German literature (and medieval Latin from Germany), which has an enormous amount to offer to other disciplines as well, arose from the developments of the late 1950s and 1960s, in which manuscript transmission came to be seen as the fundamental basis of literary history - and of the interpretation of texts. At the same time there was a new interest in the later Middle Ages, and a new interest in reception. …
