The Middle High German poet Boppe is known from some forty-five didactic strophes, mostly preserved in the Manesse manuscript, where he is depicted in an author portrait as 'der starke Boppe' of Basel, described in the Annales Basileenses for 1270 as 'a little fellow with the strength of at lest 10 or 20 men'. They were printed by von der Hagen in 1838 and again by Tolle in 1894. Except in one respect, this most welcome new edition is a model of its kind, containing (1) a brief account of the transmission (for full details of which, and for the numerous songs in later manuscripts of the Meistergesang attributed to Boppe, see the Repertorium der Sangsprucha und Meisterlieder, vol. III, 1986), (2) an extremely conservative critical text based on C, with the variant versions of the Kolmarer Liederbandschrift and the Latin recension of L30 printed in full in the apparatus, (3) a parallel Modern German translation, (4) an exhaustive commentary dealing with form, language, and content, (5) a photographic record of the entire manuscript tradition on pp. …
