Vocational FCS Programs Attract Students outside U.S

Florida International University (FIU) strives to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals in America as well as in other countries through education. Uniting the Family and Consumers Sciences (FCS) Program with the Higher Education Program in the College of Education became a way to fulfill the needs of international students and reach out to other countries. This program offers a Masters in Higher Education Community College Leadership, with an 18-hour FCS Certificate, which will provide the knowledge and skills needed to enhance high-school programs, and provide a pathway for educators to teach in community colleges. This collaboration has gained popularity in The Bahamas as well as The United Arab Emirates countries.

The program was designed to be delivered in 8-week cohort classes beginning in the fall and continuing for 2 years, for a total of 39 credits. Students begin and finish the program together. Through collaborations with the Ministry of Education and The Baptist Community College in The Bahamas, a partnership was formed in which FIU offers in-state tuition for the students while they are taking the program in their country.

Instructors fly to The Bahamas on Friday nights, teach on Saturdays face-to-face, and then teach online throughout the week. The six FCS courses cover the same standards that exist in the curriculum taught in Florida, but are focused on the needs of society and the workforce of the Bahamians. …
