Students Redesign Living Room for Seniors

Iowa High School Project

Many high school students enjoy watching the popular home decorating shows on television. Nineteen students in the Housing/Interior Design course successfully took on the challenge of redesigning the living room at Heartland Senior Services. This unique intergenerational project provided the opportunity for students to use their creativity, problem-solving skills, and elbow grease to help update the senior's living room space.

Students worked in teams to create a design proposal, which included key elements an interior designer would use. To determine their needs and get a better understanding of elderly persons, the students interviewed the senior citizens who use the space. Then, applying design concepts learned in the classroom, the students prepared visual displays that included color schemes, furniture arrangements, design ideas, and wall elevations.

Each team presented its plans to the senior citizens and members of the Heartland Board of Directors during two class periods. The Board made the final decisions on the key features of each plan that would be combined into the final composite design plan.

Once the design plan was completed, the students were ready for action. Each team had a name and wore t-shirts to promote team spirit. …
