The Bible and Literature: A Reader

Article excerpt

The Bible and Literature: A Reader. Edited by David Jasper and Stephen Prickett. Oxford/Malden, Mass.: Blackwell Publishers, 1999. xv + 333 pp. $41.75 (cloth); $29.95 (paper).

David Jasper and Stephen Prickett have put together a feast that will more than earn its inch on the shelves of any believer with a literary bent. It will prove invaluable, I suspect, both for preachers and for sophisticated Biblestudy of any sort. Following an eleven-page "General Introduction," each editor writes his own introductory essay, usefully summarizing in twenty-- five pages or so the key arguments of his own fairly recent scholarly book, both of which I've reviewed in these pages. That alone makes this collection-despite its price-quite a bargain, especially for the general reader whose interest in the relationship between literature and Scripture does not extend to slogging through the long and difficult books that underlie these very readable essays.

Eighteen sections follow, each beginning with a couple of pages from the Bible in the King James Version translation, followed by an unsigned editorial commentary of about the same length. These essays presume an intelligent reader but not one possessed of any particular background or preparation; each is carefully balanced between situating the passage in its religious context and literary-critical explication of the text as such. This commentary is followed by ten pages of excerpts engaging or alluding to the biblical passage: some nonfiction prose, some poetry, some narrative. The volume concludes with a marvelous twenty-six-piece bibliography of additional resources for those interested in the relationship between literature and Scripture.

The literary selections are sometimes extremely brief. …
