Your Influence on Students

Teachers often don't realize what an impact they have on their students and advisees, and we also may not appreciate how long former students/advisees remember us. If you care and you let your students and advisees know that, you are having an impact!

I recently had an amazing experience that reminded me of this. I was able to check my e-mail during the 2004 NACTA conference, and this is a summary of a message I received:

"Good Morning Dr. Moore. I know from your voice mail that you should get back in your office sometime on Friday. I graduated in 1998 and you were one of my many academic advisors. I forced all my other advisors into retirement, but not you. Maybe you would remember me. I spent 8 years of my life at NCSU. Of course, my grades were not the best but, I did graduate. Anyhow, I just got back from a 10 month deployment in Afghanistan as a commander for an Attack helicopter company. I was the commander for 136 soldiers, flew over 89 hours of combat missions, and I received a Bronze Star for my service in a combat zone. During our time there, we had a program were we could carry an American flag during a combat mission and dedicate that flag to someone. …
