The NEAT Project

Six schools of nursing are participating in NEAT, the Nursing Education and Technology Project, which aims to take online education in health care to a higher level. The goal is to develop small units of content, or modules, that can be assembled into different formats, shared among institutions, and tailored for specific groups of students. Jeanette McDonald, associate faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is project director.

Through NEAT, a nationwide team is working to identify common challenges in distance health care education and then develop and test academic content. The group will focus on health disparities and patient safety, topics useful for other health professions. Working with UW-Madison are Indiana University, the University of Detroit-Mercy, Arkansas State University, the University of North Dakota, and the University of Kansas. The Association of Academic Health Centers is also a key partner.

University of Kansas

Qn online program developed by the University of Kansas School of Nursing to prepare individuals for the nurse faculty role has been awarded the Sigma Theta 'lau International Pinnacle Award for Computer-Based Education Technology. Paired with faculty mentors throughout the program, students complete applied teaching projects in each of four educator courses including a linal student teaching capstone. Courses focus on teaching strategies and designing a student learning environment, curriculum and program planning and evaluation, and leaching with technology-based instructional media and strategies for web-based teaching. Students can complete the nurse educator certificate within their master's program or, as nondegree graduate students, as a postmaster's focus.

Waiden University

Btudents in the new master's degree in nursing program at Waiden University, a Minneapolis-based online higher education institution, can specialize in nursing education, as well as nursing leadership and management. Walden's online learning format requires no campus instruction, allowing nurses to earn their degrees by fitting class and field experiences into their current schedules. The school has also instituted a doctor of education program with a specialization in teacher leadership.

Villanova University
