In Case Studies in Couple and Family Therapy, Frank Dattilio takes a topic near and dear to his heart, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and turns it into a context for what he calls "conversation" between himself, the reader, and the authors of 19 different chapters. These chapters are case studies that are written by people who know their models well: Minuchin, Keim, Ulrich, Keith, Schwartz, and Rampage to name a few. Each chapter concisely but clearly outlines the basic premises of the model (cognitive behavioral, behavioral, structural, strategic, contextual, symbolic-experiential, solution focused, integrative (W. Nichols), transgenerational, cross-cultural, social constructionist/narrative, internal family systems, feminist, narrative solutions, imago, psychoanalytic, and emotionally focused). The model is then presented for couple or family therapy through a case study and commentary. Interspersed throughout each chapter are comments by the editor in which he poses ways that he sees the model integrating with CBT or suggests interventions that would make the model more cognitive behavioral. At the end of each chapter, the authors comment on Dattilio's observations.

This process works better in some chapters than others. This apparently is because of differences between the models in some cases and between the paradigms that contextualize the models in others. …
