There is nothing more satisfying than to read a short, nicely written, useful book. Sarah Fels Usher's Introduction to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Technique is exactly such a work and should elicit sounds of contentment from a quite large readership. As a primer for beginners, it lays out the "do's and don'ts" in an easy-to-digest presentation. Not an easy task.

The author was wise to focus on technique and to stay focused on technique. No doubt, the temptation to theorize, even a little bit, has spoiled the broth of the many others who have set out to create an introductory text. Here, we have a cookbook, written by a seasoned chef, which reads like a novella. It's not that the concoction is new--it's that the chef leads us into her psychotherapy kitchen and, as she prepares the meal, she comments and points out and muses on the mixing of the ingredients. We are reminded of the rules, but are caught up in the cooking. The book is artful in this way.
