The main character in The Christmas Rat is Eric. His problem is that he can't go outside because of a snowstorm. If he chooses to go outside, his lungs would sting. But the inside is dangerous for the rat, too, because the basement that he's in is full of chemicals and insect killers! In fact, Eric (the main human character in the story) has even heard talk about an exterminator!

We must say that if we were characters in the story, we would have worked to try to save the rat with Eric. We would have called the police or done something, anything, to help out. Well, it turns out that Eric is able to save the rat from dying until Christmas by working really hard to dump all of the poisons down the drain. …
