Paulo Freire Pedagogy of the City. New York: Continuum Press, 1993.

This book consists of interviews which took place during Freire's tenure on the Bureau of Education of Sao Paulo. In essence, the interviews chronicle the activities of the author as he was directing the bureau as its Secretary.

Freire is known for his earlier Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In that volume as well as the present one, Freire "confirms the central thesis that public education must play a decisive role in the continuing reformation of a democratic society in which all of us can have the freedom and opportunity to create knowledge from our own experience." (9)

Public education, for Freire, is a political enterprise which calls for progressive thinking.

While in a competent conservative educational practice one searches, through the teaching of content, to hide the raison d'etre of a sizable number of social problems, in a progressive educational practice, also competent, one searches, thorough the teaching of content, to unveil the reasons behind these problems. …
