Nov. 2: The Financial Times reported that the US Congress had passed the "Sudan Peace Act," a bill aimed at removing from the New York Stock Exchange companies engaged in business in Sudan. Among those targeted were PetroChina and Canada's Talisman Energy. [11/2 FT]

Nov. 24: The New York Times reported that former Prime Minister Sadeq al-Mahdi, who had fled the country in December 1996, had returned to Sudan from his voluntary four-year exile in Cairo. [11/24 NYT]

Nov. 28: The Khartoum daily Al-Sahafi al-Dawli reported that beginning on 26 November, Eritrea and the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) had begun amassing soldiers on their countries' respective borders. [11/29 NYT]

Dec. 8: During evening prayers at AI-Sunna al-Muhammadiya Mosque, in Garaffa, a village north of Khartoum, an armed gunman shot and killed 20 worshipers, and injured 40 others. The gunman, `Abbas al-Baqer `Abbas, a member of the group Takfir wa al-Hijra, or Repentance and Flight, was later shot to death by police. …
