Aging and Male Sexuality. Raul C. Schiavi. New York: Cambridge. 1999. 253 pp. ISBN 0-521-- 65391-6. $44.95 paper.

In Aging and Male Sexuality, Raul Schiavi provides a patient-centered review of the sensitive and controversial topics surrounding men, aging, and sexuality. He encourages readers to look at social-psychological issues in men's lives, specifically how men's perceptions of themselves and their world shape their sexuality.

First he identifies these influences as psychological and then as sociological. In a later chapter, he looks at the way in which these influences mold how men cope and adapt to aging and, in turn, how coping and adaptation styles influence men's sexual lives.

He explores how a partner's life and relationship satisfaction shape a man's sexual life. Dr. Schiavi frames these dynamics within the larger contexts of AIDS, health care, industrialization, the women's rights movement, and retirement and nursingcare practices.

Toward the end of the book, he describes in detail the assessment and treatment of sexual disorders, including sexual difficulties that are not dependent on sexual performance such as relaxation, libido, foreplay, and partner problems. …
