For the person in the helping professions, Schuyler, a psychiatrist, presents an easy to read and understand treatise on one of the contemporary therapies. The book is divided into five parts.

Part I examines preliminary issues in psychotherapy, focusing on identification of successful ingredients in treatment. The therapeutic model proposed by Schuyler developed not from a single individual but through a series of meetings with other practicing therapists and researchers.

Part II discusses the basics of cognitive therapy including its roots, underlying assumptions and application principles. Ideas are stated clearly and in jargon-free terms so that even a layperson could make some application of the principles.

Part III is an illustration of the principles previously outlines. The author takes a common problem, losing a love object, that most persons in a counseling situation encounter, and gives an example of step by step application of cognitive therapy principles. …
