A survey of Executive PA magazine's 20,000 readers has revealed that the responsibilities of office professionals - secretaries, PAs and administrators are set to rise.

With flatter management structures and the increased use of new technology, nine out of ten of the survey respondents reported that they have new responsibilities. However, the vast majority of these, 89%, have received no training to help carry out their new tasks. As a result the gap is widening between the training support office professionals receive and what they need to meet their broadening role.

The survey, carried out by Hemsley Fraser, a UK market leader for providing office professional and supervisory training, identified a number of key roles for which office professionals are increasingly responsible.

* Two-thirds play the leading role in organising events.

* Over three-quarters (76%) have more responsibility for using the Internet.

* Two-thirds play a greater role in managing projects.

* 60% have more responsibility for office management.

Respondents felt that, in order to meet these new demands, they need training in:

* A greater understanding of business issues (52%).

* Working proactively with their manager (46%). …
